The Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra, Pinaceae), also known as the Queen of the Alps, grows in the Bavarian, Austrian and Swiss Alps at altitudes ranging from around 1,300 to over 2,000 metres. It reaches a height of 20–30 metres and can live for up to 1,000 years. In the Middle Ages, Swiss stone pine cones were regarded as symbols of fertility and immortality.
